Vancouver Island University, aka Malaspina College, has taken the unusual step of banning the Nanaimo campus radio station CHLY Radio Malaspina from university grounds. After a station-sponsored party on campus last year, CHLY was accused of “debauchery” by VIU officials and prohibited from sponsoring additional events on campus. This might sound like a joke but the ban could actually lead to the station being taken off the air by the CRTC since it no longer has a direct physical connection with VIU. Frankly, I think VIU has gone way over the top on this one and is projecting an image of staid conservatism unfriendly to anyone or anything which doesn’t fit their conformist profile. It’s sort of appropriate that for many of us the public face of VIU is Robbins Parking.
