The Nanaimo Art Gallery, 900 Fifth Street, Building 330, will present a new exhibition by Scott Leaf from August 28 to October 3, 2009. Leaf’s new work “Speaking Volumes” is a raw earthenware clay installation. The presentation consists of several large rectangular configurations of clay strategically situated through the gallery. This installation will be created on site with raw earthenware clay and is intended to slowly transform over the duration of the exhibit.
Leafs work is the culmination of 20 years experience working with clay. The sensual nature of the medium, combined with a trained emphasis toward object development and refinement has influenced this current exhibit. As the title of the exhibition would imply, the medium itself, within the spotlight and scrutiny of the upper gallery, is intended to provoke dialogue. The employment of raw clay in its temporal form is at once exciting and unique. An exhibition of this nature has the ability to challenge many existing preconceptions associated with clay.
The opening reception at the gallery’s Vancouver Island University location is on Friday, September 11, 2009, from 5 to 7 pm. For more information call 250-740-6350.
