Start With Art Nanaimo (SWAN), 366 Selby Street in the Old City Quarter, had its grand opening on Saturday with entertainment by Alice Frank-Campbell. The enthusiastic crowd at the gallery was introduced to the concept of collective painting or learning to paint through shared experiences. Studio 366 will be open to artists at all levels Mondays from 1 to 4 pm and Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm. Everyone is welcome to come here to enjoy painting with support from fellow artists. Bring along your own art supplies or share those available on site (donations of art supplies are most welcome). Physically or mentally challenged artists are invited to express themselves here. There will be workshops and other supportive activities, and gallery members will be able to show and sell their work. Annual membership is $5. For more information on this volunteer-operated, not-for-profit project, call Eve Reinarz at 250-753-1907. Nanaimo artists and art enthusiasts now have an informal place to meet and build community.
While you’re in the area, also visit the Robert Naish Gallery a few doors south at 390 Selby Street (open Monday to Thursday 5:30 to 9 pm). Naish’s colourful and expressive creations are among Nanaimo’s as yet undiscovered treasures. Art investors take note.
