Headliners School of Performing Arts, 165 Fraser St., Nanaimo, will present the Canadian super group A Stellar Band of Neighbours at 8 pm on Sunday, December 12, 2010. This all-star roots- rock group is made up of current and former members of The Tragically Hip, The Odds, The Grapes of Wrath, and Doug and the Slugs. Members include Steve Drake from the Odds, Kevin Kane from the Grapes of Wrath, Johnny Fay of the Tragically Hip, Simon Kendall from Doug and the Slugs, Del Cowsill of Dustin Bentall band, and acclaimed songwriter Wyckham Porteous.
One great band. Six great players. One great chunk of CanCon history scrambled up to create a new and exciting sound. Steven Drake (the Odds) phoned up a bunch of his friends who all happened to live in the same few blocks and suggested they start a band. Simon Kendall (Doug and the Slugs), Del Cowsill (Dustin Bentall), and Steven were playing with Wyckham Porteous already, so they were all in. Kevin Kane (Grapes of Wrath) was in Kelowna writing songs and had worked with Steven and Del on a project with Johnny Fay (Tragically Hip). They also got excited and jumped in with the rest of the crew. The chemistry was immediate as was the ability of the band to come up with great songs.
The Neighbours as they started to call themselves booked a show at the Crescent Beach Legion this past summer and the response was overwhelming. The night was so great that the results have been released as Stellar Band of Neighbours At the Legion Hall. Now the rest of the country is getting the chance to hear what the fuss is all about. The Stellar Band of Neighbours want to introduce you to the musical neighbourhood they inhabit. And what a neighbourhood it is! The December 12, 2010, Nanaimo show will be a small and intimate. Don’t miss it. Workshops will be held in the day. Please call Headliners at 250-753-2323 for more information or to buy tickets ($25 in advance or $30 at the door).
