Among the many local authors I met at the recent ReadUP TweetUP at the Nanaimo Museum was Ladysmith children’s writer Rachel Dunstan Muller. Between caring for her five children, Rachel has found the time to write four young adult novels for Orca Book Publishers of Victoria, BC. When the Curtain Rises recounts the search for a magical ancestor which leads to a mysterious rosewood box. Ten Thumb Sam is a story of intrigue set in the Triple Top Circus. The Solstice Cup deals with a supernatural fairy world encountered by twin girls at summer solstice. Muller’s latest book, Squeeze, published in September, 2010, is about a weekend caving expedition gone wrong. Some of the stories in these books reflect Rachel’s fascination with Irish folklore and they would make perfect gifts for children aged nine to 12.
