Sid Shniad in Nanaimo

Mid Islanders for Justice and Peace in the Middle East is presenting The View from Occupied Palestine at 2 pm on Saturday, February 12, 2011, in PPWC Hall, 596 Albert Street (at Prideaux), Nanaimo. Guest speaker Sid Shniad from Independent Jewish Voices will outline the grotesque reality of what is happening in the Occupied Territories and within Israel itself.

Topics include Israeli legislation against Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, home seizures and evictions in East Jerusalem, the Israeli government crackdown on social action and human rights organizations, the significance of the “Palestine Papers”, the international BDS (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions) movement, growing North American Jewish and Israeli opposition to Israel’s policies and practices, and CPCCA: the new McCarthyism in Canada.

Sid Shniad believes that “people should treat the ongoing crisis in Israel/Palestine in exactly the same way they’d treat any other human rights crisis rooted in occupation and the imposition of rule of one people upon another — instead of avert ing their eyes out of concern for the feelings of Zionists and/or fear of being accused of being anti-semitic — as well as the need to get actively involved in the terribly belated resolution to this crisis.”

Sid Shniad spent nearly 30 years as research director at the Telecommunications Workers. A longtime activist in the labour and antiwar movements, he has dedicated the bulk of his time since his retirement to doing solidarity work through the Independent Jewish Voices organization.
