On Saturday a new location of the popular Vancouver Island chain Serious Coffee opened in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, 300 – 60 Commercial Street, Nanaimo. There was live music by the Nanaimo Celtic-Canadian group Trinitude and free baked goods for everyone present. The VICC Serious Coffee outlet is certain to become a Nanaimo institution with its sidewalk seating, colourful interior, and fair prices. Aside from the full menu of coffees and teas, Serious Coffee serves tasty breakfast quesadillas, soups, sandwiches, bagels, chilli, and meat pies. And of course, they make their own Nanaimo bars. You’ll like the long opening hours: weekdays 6:30 am to 9 pm, Satudays 7 am to 9 pm, and Sundays 8 am to 5 pm.
Interestingly, this Serious Coffee outlet has been adopted by the adjacent Nanaimo Museum as the museum’s semi-official café and there’s a connecting door between the two. On Saturday the museum celebrated its first anniversery at its new location in the VICC with a ceremony announcing the 2009 inductees to the Sports Hall of Fame. The visiting “Rocket” Richard Exhibit opened on Saturday and it’s a must if you’re a hockey fan. This traveling exhibition will only be here until October, and at $2 admission, the Nanaimo Museum is a bargain, so hurry down.

I have visited many coffee shops and this one definitely has the best atmosphere (and the coffee goes without saying) I have been in. What a fab looking place!
