Probus is a club for for men and women who have retired from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. There are over 300,000 members in approximately 4,000 Probus clubs worldwide. The Probus Club of Nanaimo #83 meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Nanaimo Yacht Club, 400 Newcastle Avenue at the foot of Rosehill Street. There’s a long waiting list of people desiring to join Club #83 as membership is capped at around 250. The upside is that non-member visitors are welcome to attend the monthly meetings. The admission fee of $2 per person covers coffee and donuts at the back of the room. It all begins at 9:30 am with club business followed by a guest speaker, but arrive by 9:15 am to get a seat. At the Tuesday, April 13, 2010, meeting Alan Lomax, Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, will speak on Peak Oil.
