Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community has been given an official occupancy permit from the City of Nanaimo. “This is a momentous day for us,” says Kari Fetherston, project administrator for the 25-unit multifamily development at 347 Seventh Street, Nanaimo. “Getting our occupancy permit is a much-awaited milestone and we are thrilled to finally reach it. Now the 11 owners who have bought into Pacific Gardens can move in.”
Designed by local architects Jolyon Brown and Ian Niamath, Pacific Gardens features a striking glass-roofed indoor atrium and a host of environmentally-friendly features. These include kitchen cabinets made of wheat-board, low VOC finishes and paints, thermally efficient roofs, walls and windows, heat recovery ventilators in every unit, and dual-flush toilets.
The first cohousing project on central Vancouver Island, Pacific Gardens has a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom plus den units with a wide variety of amenities. The complex has a large kitchen and dining hall for communal meals, crafts room, music room (with piano), woodworking shop, exercise room, bicycle storage, and a children’s play area.
The site’s extensive green space has natural flora and fauna including a pond and heritage apple trees. It borders a park along the salmon-bearing Chase River. Its beautiful grounds overlooking Mount Benson will also have extensive organic gardens where residents will grow their own vegetables and herbs.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Pacific Gardens will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at 1 pm. For more information, contact Kari Fetherston, Project Administrator, 250-754-3060 (office), 250-591-0501 (home), or 250-713-4680 (cell).

Now that we have occupancy, sales will be closing on 11 units very soon with 14 great units still available. The selection is fabulous, as we have just opened up a one- bedroom and a one-bedroom-and den for sale. We also have several two-bedroom, two-bedroom-and-den and three-bedroom-and-den units. All have either generous decks or patios and every one has an in-unit storage/utility room and a large storage locker in the basement.
Our regular Open Houses are Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 pm and our potlucks on Thursdays starting at 6 pm. Any visitors who would like to come at another time are welcome to phone the office at 250-754-3060.

Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community received its occupancy permit on September 4, 2009, and is a lively place now, with parties, concerts, and celebrations held in our dining hall, ping-pong games in the north atrium, and work bees in our soon-to-be-planted gardens. We’re busy drafting policies, forming committees, doing marketing of our remaining unsold units, and learning the ins-and-outs of being a strata corporation. We have potlucks every Thursday night at 6 pm that are open to the wider community, and two guest rooms available for visitors. We hope you will come see our beautiful building! Please call us at 250 754-3060 to arrange a tour. You can find out more about us at www.pacificgardens.ca.
