Nanaimo City Council has proclaimed September 2009 as busking month in Nanaimo and the Beat of the Street Society is busking for positive change and they don’t mean just dollars! On Saturday, September 5, 2009, the Society is organizing the Beat of the Street Busking Festival in the Lions Waterfront Pavilion at Maffeo Sutton Park from 2 to 8 pm. Billed as Woodstock West, organizer Cathy Davis calls it the start of “a new era for busking in Nanaimo, busking Canadian style”. The lineup is:
- Willie Thrasher – Native busker
- The Owl and The Pussy Cat – eclectic parodies in song
- The Cunningham Family – Celtic and family oriented
- The Grey Notes – original blues and classic rock
- ID3 – homegrown hip hop
- Handsome and the Horribles – original rock
- Myles Black and the Pearly Whites – folk rock and more
All buskers present will be invited to play. It will be free, fun, and a “Happening”. Sing, dance, and collect free hugs. The Beat of the Street Society gives special thanks to the City of Nanaimo, Parks, Recreation and Culture, Defiler Productions, and Caya Signs.

I just got word of a new group formed here in Nanaimo called THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS with band leader Tyler Blake I have known Tyler since he was a very young boy and his musical talents are amazing, He is a big fan of the late Johnny Cash and does lots of his songs The freedom fighters will also be added to this festival and will not disappoint you.

Hope the weather is great as we know the music will make the sun shine even more. Another great family event for Nanaimo.
