You won’t want to miss the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust’s 10th Annual Summer Picnic at the Parnassian Woods (Van Kerkoerle property) in Cassidy. Mark your calendar for Sunday, August 15, 2010, from noon to 4 pm. Again this year, a highlight of the afternoon will be the mellow music of singer, song-writer Gerry Barnum.
NALT’s summer picnic is always a laid-back social gathering that features such treats as a wild Sockeye salmon barbeque donated by Hub City Fisheries – a full-meal deal for only $6. There will also be live local entertainment and guided walks of the tranquil 40-acre property and NALT’s native plant nursery. The nursery will be open for sales that day. Added attractions include the new edible wild plants demonstration garden at the nursery and a new boardwalk and bridges installed along the trails – all thanks to grants from the BC Ministry of Housing and Social Development.
If you have not been to this property before, drive south from Nanaimo on the main highway until you pass the Cassidy Inn; then make a right turn onto Spruston Road just before the Haslam Creek bridge. From there, follow the signs about two kilometers up Spruston Road, then turn left to the end of Frost Road (watch for signs for the Natural Abundance Native Plant Nursery along the way). Join NALT and friends on August 15, 2010, for lots of great food and a mellow summer afternoon. For more information, call the NALT Stewardship Centre at 250-714-1990.
