The Popular Participation Movement, a campus club at Vancouver Island University, is having its 5th annual May Day community potluck at 5 pm on Saturday, May 1, 2010, in the picnic shelter near the river at Bowen Park, Nanaimo. There will be a brief program and perhaps some discussion. The rest is social time. You’re requested to bring food or drink to share (if you can) as well as your own plate and cutlery. Everyone is welcome.
May Day commemorates the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago on May 4, 1886, when police opened fire on strikers demanding an eight-hour working day. In much of the world, May Day is an official public holiday, although in Canada and the U.S. Labour Day in September has that status.
