The Nanaimo Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition entitled Mappings: Departure Points at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, campus location, 900 Fifth Street, until January 8, 2011. Mappings explores the work of two distinguished artists, Bettina Matzkuhn and Robert Naish. Both work within the context of the fascinating visual idiom of cartography. Elements such as gridlines, land marks, or indicators of passage become significant forms within their work.
Each artist has charted and explored their own interior and exterior geographies and their findings allow us to consider, perhaps even question, the constructed spaces we inhabit and often take for granted in our everyday lives. In this exhibition the map itself invariably becomes a vehicle for communication, interaction, and self reflection in its provocation of narratives and various departure points.
An Educational Gallery Tour of this exhibition with docent Marie Egan will occur at 2 pm on Saturday, November 20, 2010. An artists talk with both Matzkuhn and Naish is scheduled for Tuesday, November 23, 2010, from noon to 1 pm. Admission is free although donations are gratefully accepted. For more information call 250-740-6350. All day parking at Vancouver Island University costs $4.
