Ian Gartshore, 55, a candidate in the March 26, 2011, municipal bi-election in Nanaimo, was the Green Party candidate for Nanaimo – North Cowichan in the May 2009 British Columbia provincial election. After returning to Nanaimo in 1996, Ian established the Shore Counselling Society, a non-profit agency whose mandate is to strengthen relationships and well-being. Ian has volunteered extensively, including helping to start Energy Solutions for Vancouver Island (Society), chairing the Harewood Community Centre Cooperative, and others. Last fall he chaired a well-attended public transportation forum in Nanaimo.
Ian is both a marriage and family therapist and a certified energy advisor through his company Shore Energy Solutions Ltd. He is considered to be gentle, fun, empathetic, insightful, and broad-minded. His approach is to be a team player who will work to make Nanaimo a better place for all. He is willing to work with city councillors, staff, businesses, and residents alike.
Like all cities, Nanaimo faces the challenges of having to cope with increasing demands within the constraint of a limited revenue source (property taxes). Ian has solutions that will reduce expenses for residents and businesses while boosting needed revenues for our city, making Nanaimo an even more desirable place to live, work, learn, contribute, and play.
Other issues he will champion include better planning in Nanaimo so as to reduce the need for transportation, shifting funds to improve economic and environmental sustainability, promoting a strengthened sense of community and well-being, and more. Ian Gartshore: “I am passionate about the well-being of people, our collective and amazing home, and arriving at solutions that work for both.”
