Gabriola’s Summer Tour 2010 is a self-guided tour of selected art studios on Gabriola Island every Friday afternoon in August 2010. This circuit will give you a taste of what is to come on Thanksgiving weekend in October when artists welcome visitors to the 14th Annual Gabriola Studio Tour. Featuring more than 50 artists in 41 studios, the free self-guided Thanksgiving Tour clearly demonstrates why Gabriola Island deserves its reputation as the “Isle of the Arts.” You’ll have a chance to meet the artisans at the Kick-off Gala evening on Friday, October 8, 2010, and during the tour you’ll learn how they transform their creative energy into works of art for everyone.
The full-colour map brochure is a showcase of fine literary and visual art, oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings, giclees, mixed media, photography, one-of a kind fashions, leatherwork, semi-precious silver and beaded jewellery, pottery, stonework, wood carvings, sculpture, glasswork, and unique items for your home and garden. On Thanksgiving weekend, all of the studios will be open over the three days from 10 am to 4 pm, providing access to the largest configuration of home-based studios in the region. Enjoy a special weekend on a spectacular Gulf Island!
The Gabriola Arts Council has been hosting this annual event since its inception in 1997, and the tour has become a fixture on the local arts scene. It affords patrons an opportunity to talk directly to the artists about their work and to visit an island where time seems to stand still. Whether visiting Gabriola for a day or for the whole weekend, visitors can expect to find a quiet charm and serenity, a great golf course, a full range of retail stores, and—wine! The organizers are thrilled to have a wine-tasting on Saturday, October 9, 2010, from 4 to 6 pm at the Village Liquor Store, home to specialty wines.
Only a 20-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo, access to Gabriola Island is also easy from Vancouver by floatplane to Silva Bay. Gabriola is proud to showcase the talents of its award-winning artists who create work for national and international markets. The free tour brochure is widely available throughout the region—at branches of the Vancouver Island Regional Library, shops and galleries on Vancouver Island, the Gabriola Island ferry terminal, and from the Gabriola Arts Council’s office at Gabriola Artworks.
