The Nanaimo Art Gallery is organizing a series of workshops on advanced watercolours, beginner drawing, and acrylic painting at their campus location, 900 Fifth Street, Building 330. Space at all three workshops is limited so call 250-740-6350 early to inquire or register.
Advanced Watercolours for Adults and Seniors is a four-week workshop with artist Arless McNeill designed for those who have previously taken the gallery’s Introduction to Watercolours course or who have some experience with watercolours. How to paint what you see and how to make changes are covered. Emphasis will be on the ‘what if’ to alter elements that can be used to create landscapes/wildlife paintings. Discussions include composition, colour, and seasonal pallets. This four-week workshop will be on October 14, 21, 28, and November 4, 2009, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The cost is $90 plus GST or $85 plus GST for seniors or $80 plus GST for gallery members. Participants must bring their own supplies aside from paper which is supplied by the gallery.
The one-day Absolute Beginner Drawing Workshop with artist Linda Findlay will be on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 10 am to 4 pm with a half-hour lunch break. It is aimed at those who have always wanted to draw but can’t figure out how to start. Those present will learn about different drawing mediums and techniques through a series of fun drawing exercises that will help build confidence. They’ll learn about charcoal, conte, graphite, and the techniques best suited to each medium. How to choose drawing paper will also be discussed. Instruction will be given on gesture drawing, line drawing, and the basics of developing value shading techniques. The workshop will take the format of discussion, question and answer, instructor demonstrations, and student practice through making sample drawings. Workshop supplies are included in the price of $50.
The one-day Absolute Beginner Acrylic Painting Workshop with artist Linda Findlay is on Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 10 am to 4 pm (half hour lunch break). This workshop is aimed at those who have always wanted to paint but feel intimidated. Starting at the very beginning, students will learn the basics about acrylic paint including how to mix basic colours, how to use brushes, which brushes are best for each technique, the pros and cons of various painting surfaces, where and how to use gesso, and a brief introduction to mediums and gels. The aim of this workshop is to learn some basic skills about working with paint and to provide encouragement by demystifying the medium and its tools. The workshop will take the format of discussion, question and answer, instructor demonstrations, and student practice through making samples of various painting techniques. Workshop supplies are included in the price of $55.
