The Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community is having their monthly potluck at Unitarian Hall, 595 Townsite Road, Nanaimo, at 6 pm on Friday, May 29, 2009. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. You are requested to bring some food to share and this month the theme is the 100 Mile Diet. Call 250-754-3060 for more information.
A highlight of the evening will be a presentation by the Vancouver Island University Sustainability Network titled Composting for Groups. Composting in a multi-family complex such as Pacific Gardens is different than composting in a single family home and this talk will be the perfect way to find out how to get your condo or group can get started.
A showing of the refreshing and comical film, “Zeke the Sheik and the Ladder of Matter” will follow. This short film is the real-life story of a man who has built a 200-foot-long, forty-foot-high pile of compost and a Garden of Eden in a residential suburb of Los Angeles. The area is covered with beautiful plants and trees, geese and turkeys, and receives surprising community support.
Pacific Gardens Cohousing is a 25-unit condo-style apartment community nearing completion in Nanaimo with a focus on healthy living, organic gardening, and respect for the environment. The beautiful 4.37 acre property offers spectacular views of Mount Benson and is bounded by the Chase River. The extensive green space offers a variety of natural flora and fauna, an old heritage apple orchard, a seasonal pond, and ample space for organic gardening.
