Coastal Black Estate Winery

Abel O’Brennan giving a winery tour

The 800-acre Coastal Black Estate Fruit Winery is the largest of its kind in the Comox Valley. In 2009 the landowning family decided they had had enough of dairy farming and converted the property to fruit production. Today they produce a variety of fruit wines, fresh fruit, raw honey, and custom milled lumber. Although they’ve only been bottling for two years, their fruit wines have already won gold and silver awards at shows. Their 80 acres of blackberries comprise the largest cultivated blackberry farm in Canada. In addition there are 20 acres of blueberries and raspberries. Organic practices are followed throughout and Coastal Black handles all pollinating with their own bees which helps make their signature blackberry honey wines and meads unique. Most bottles are priced under $20 and private wine merchants all around Vancouver Island carry their products.

Coastal Black Estate Winery offers guided tours of their premises at Black Creek, British Columbia, Canada,  followed by a wine tasting. To get there, take Exit 144 off the Inland Island Highway #19 south of Campbell River and turn right on North Island Highway from Hamm Road. About two kilometers south, turn right on Endall Road and watch for their sign on the left. Call 250-337-8325 for more information.
