Dr. Alice Rothchild will discuss Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel, as well as her newly released second edition of Broken Promises, Broken Dreams, Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience, at 5 pm on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Nanaimo Public Library, 90 Commercial Street. Dreams is Rothchild’s account of her visits to Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. Her concern is with the public health consequences of Israel’s occupation, which will shock readers who have paid little attention to the situation in Palestine/Israel. Created from hundreds of tapes Rothchild made with Israelis and Palestinians over a long period of visiting Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel, her book is amazing. She is a wonderful speaker who can really reach her audiences.
Rothchild describes the situation on the ground in Gaza and the West Bank, showing that the devastating public health situation is completely connected to Israel’s imposition of roadblocks, checkpoints, permits, curfews, and other mechanisms of the Israeli occupation make ordinary life impossible.
An obstetrician-gynecologist who has worked in the health care reform and women’s movements for many years, Rothchild was co-editor of the first Our Bodies, Ourselves and a founder of the progressive Jewish group, Visions of Peace with Justice in Israel/ Palestine (now American Jews for a Just Peace – Boston). Active in several social justice organizations, she co-organized the AJJP Health and Human Rights Project, was the Medical Director of the Women’s Community Health Center in Cambridge, Mass., from 1977-1979, and a co-founder of Urban Woman and Child Health, Inc in Jamaica Plain, Mass.
