At 7:30 pm on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, the Port Theatre in Nanaimo will host the Broadway to BC musical revue produced by composer and pianist, Sarah M. Wood, featuring Tina Jones (vocals and trumpet), Earle Gibson (vocals and trombone), Sarah Sorgiovanni (vocals), Cameron Wigmore (sax), and Mauro Azzara (guitar).
The event, which combines film, music, theatre, song, and dance into an hour-long variety show, promises to be an elegant and entertaining way to spend a cold February night. Highlights include the premiere screening of Sailing to Schooner Cove, accompanied live by Azzara on guitar and Wood on piano; a choreographed ballet performed by award-winning dancer, Candice Helin, and numbers from Wood’s new stage musical, Take off or Take the Fall, supported by vocalists Tina Jones, Earle Gibson, and Sarah Sorgiovanni. The show will kick off with the unique musical stylings of Jazzalele.
Based on the enthusiastic response so far, Wood says she hopes Broadway to BC is just the first of many collaborative productions. Classically trained and influenced by everything from Sondhiem to Satie, Wood’s musical career began at age 10 when she composed her first piece of music on her mother’s piano. Since then, she’s written over 250 pieces of music on both piano and guitar. Her musical style ranges from classical to jazz, theatrical to sacred, and her live performances have included everything from intimate solos to accompaniment for three-choir ensembles.
Broadway to BC is part of the Port’s Studio Series. The series, presented in theatre-in-the-round style with seating on the stage, gives audience members access to a unique performance with enhanced acoustics in an intimate studio-type setting. Admission is by suggested donation of $5 to $10. Call 250-754-8550 for more details.
