Every Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 pm from mid-May until October, the Bowen Road Farmers Market will set up on the Vancouver Island Exhibition grounds behind the swimming pool at Beban Park, 2300 Bowen Road, Nanaimo. This is the market’s second year at the location and Nanaimo residents will again have a chance to pick up some fresh 100-mile-diet produce, meats, seafood, preserves, and baked goods. There will be nursery plants for spring gardens and an array of local handicrafts and works of art. It’s a colourful scene well worth a stop on your way home from work every Wednesday afternoon.
In 1960 around 60 percent of the food consumed on Vancouver Island was locally grown. Today it’s only six percent. The other 94 percent is imported from afar. Over the next few decades the cost of fossil fuels is sure to rise and the price of imported food will inevitably follow. But by then, our local farmers will have been driven out of business, their lands subdivided by developers. The pennies saved now on cheap imports will cost our grandchildren dearly. That’s why it’s so important to support our local farming community by buying healthy local produce whenever possible. And the Bowen Road Farmers Market is the perfect opportunity to do so while having a bit of fun and meeting your neighbours at the same time.
