From May through October 2010 an exciting collection of public art has been on display in Maffeo Sutton Park and McGregor Park in downtown Nanaimo as a result of a public art partnership between the Nanaimo Art Gallery and the City of Nanaimo (Parks, Recreation and Culture). The Nanaimo Art Gallery will be offering these works for sale at public auction at an event to be held from 4:30 to 6 pm on Friday, October 22, 2010, on the Spirit Square in Maffeo Sutton Park (the large blue canopy near the washrooms). Among the works up for auction are Dancing with Eagles, a large chainsaw sculpture created by artist Dan Richey. The sculpture weighs approximately 1000 lbs and will need to be moved professionally to the successful purchaser’s location. Dan Richey will supervise this move and the cost will be approximately $200 to $300 depending on location. Transportation and site preparation will be coordinated between the purchaser and the artist.
Large Palm Tree is a large metal sculpture created by Ben Marks and Matt Conley of Macon Welding. It is currently on display in McGregor Park across from the Port Theatre as part of an installation that includes another tree and a stone base. The tree on auction is the one on the right. The same artists also created Small Palm Tree, a welded metal sculpture currently on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. Both sculptures will need to be moved professionally to the successful purchaser’s location and will require concrete base blocks. Macon Welding will supervise this move and installation and the cost will vary depending on the purchaser‘s location.
Explorative Entrance is a wooden sculpture in stained marine mahogany created by artist Cecile Van Woensel and currently on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. This sculpture weighs about 33 lbs and measures approximately three feet high by a bit under four feet wide. The same artist is responsible for Open Coastal Natural Galleries, a wooden sculpture in stained marine mahogany and also on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. This sculpture weighs about 44 lbs and measures approximately three feet high by a bit over four feet wide. Both of these can be moved by the purchaser.
Pelagic Cormorant (Seabird) is a ceramic sculpture created by artist Lori Sorensen and currently on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. It is built of stoneware clay, glazed, and fired to cone six, and then assembled on a metal post. The piece stands about one meter tall, and it is approximately a ½ meter in diameter. The clay sculpture is designed in sections, which stack together and are secured to the inner anchoring system. The bird is designed with a system to anchor the piece to the platform and to connect the bird using various materials. The artist will disassemble the sculpture at Maffeo Sutton Park and repair any damaged parts. The artist will then reassemble the piece at its new home using a more permanent material to connect the layers.
Seated Figure is a welded metal sculpture created by artist Mike Szucs and currently on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. It weighs about 40 lbs and measures approximately four feet high by 2.5 feet wide at the base. It can be moved by the purchaser. Great Blue Heron is another welded metal sculpture created by George and Laura Ewing of Gem Fabrications and currently on display in Maffeo Sutton Park. This sculpture weighs about 80 lbs and measures approximately three feet high by 3.5 feet wide. It can be moved by the purchaser.
