The Nanaimo Art Gallery downtown at 150 Commercial Street is presenting two workshops for children in the series ArtRageous Saturdays. These events give parents the chance to take a break while their kids create some fun and fabulous works of art to take home. It’s open to children are between the ages of 5 and 11 years old every other Saturday morning from 10:30 am until noon. All the crafts employed are age-friendly so older or younger siblings are welcome to join in for either workshop. It’s just $10 per child or $15 for two siblings ($10 per parent if they’d like to do projects with their child/children). There’s no charge for parents to watch. With the presentation of a LEAP Card, the fee is only $5 per child. All ArtRageous projects are supervised by professional artists or teachers and all materials are provided by the gallery.
ArtRageous Saturday on November 27, 2010, is all about texture. Children will learn the joys of making texture rubbings from common objects such as the bottom of their shoes. They’ll be encouraged to use their imaginations to learn how to create a memorable multi-media monster drawing from their rubbings while adding features with pastel, crayon, and marker.
The ArtRageous Saturday on December 11, 2010, is titled Christmas Bonanza. The kids will get into the holiday spirit and join others to make holiday themed arts and crafts. Working with collage they will first learn how to make a humourous reindeer drawing, then learn how to create their own unique Christmas ornaments. The excitement of the season will take hold. Parents are welcome to register their children for either workshop at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, 150 Commercial Street. For more information call Chris Kuderle at 250-740-6350.
